Educational visit to Technoparc

As part of their “Design and Prototype” program, Secondary 2 students from Collège Sainte-Anne in Montreal, accompanied by their teacher, came to meet design mentor Marcelo Santos of Technoparc’s resident company, 911 Innovations. Their goal was to understand the stages of the product development cycle to the manufacturing of a prototype. They then went to visit the company MDA, located near the Technoparc, to see a good example of a successful final project. The students were able to study a satellite model whose steel structure is covered with aluminum. This model was designed, manufactured and installed by 911 innovations. We can see in the photos the “before” and “after”. A great way to show a finished product for these students!

Transportation committee of the Technoparc

At the last transportation committee meeting, which includes employees from many resident companies of the Technoparc, several recommendations and solutions were evaluated.
First, since some employees will come to work on January 2nd, 2019, the STM adds a service on line 72. The schedule for this day can be consulted in the “schedules and plans” section on the STM Website. It should be noted that proposals have been made by the STM to improve bus service at the Technoparc. Amongst others: addition of a stop on line 215 eastbound (paired with 225) at the Hymus / Alfred-Nobel intersection. It could also have another increase for the summer of 2019.
It was raised to the STM that at peak times, the buses on line 72 are at maximum capacity. As well, a multi-stakeholder meeting, including Technoparc Montréal, was held to address safety issues for pedestrians and cyclists on the Saint-Regis Boulevard ramp, near the Technoparc. A long-term solution has been considered, namely the optimization of the Saint-Régis ramp to create a bicycle path. Finally, Technoparc Montréal took the initiative to start a micro-shuttle project in collaboration with Netlift. More information is available in the article above. Technoparc Montreal would like to sincerely thank the participants in the transportation committee with whom global solutions are studied to make the quality of life of residents even more enjoyable.

Monthly Sustainability Tips & Insights from ERA: corporate recycling

Most businesses know the fundamentals of recycling: paper, plastic, carboard, metals, and some electronics can be recycled into something new. However, from a sustainability perspective recycling is not so simple. This month ERA is focusing on training our staff on the complexities of proper corporate recycling.
Canadians throw too much garbage into their blue bins and it costs us millions of dollars annually. Roughly 7.5% of items put in Montreal’s blue boxes are contaminants and end up being transferred to the landfill. Sorted materials are bailed and sold to countries like China, India, and Indonesia. However, a new global development will soon affect Canadian businesses: China, the world’s biggest importer of recyclable material, started banning imports of paper with more than 0.5 percent contamination and is no longer accepting post-consumer plastics. This leaves Montreal to allocate $29 million over two years to keep our main sorting center afloat and divert 150,000+ tonnes of recyclable materials from the landfill.
Here are a few commonplace items that don’t belong in recycling: plastic cutlery and plates, photographic paper, CD cases, containers which held paint, oils, or lubricants, pizza boxes and snack wrappers.
On the other hand, here are items which require an Ecocentre: styrofoam, lightbulbs, batteries, aerosols and electronics.
Click this link to locate the Montreal Ecocentres.
One last note: don’t forget to wash your items! Not only is it considerate for the people who sort your recyclable materials, but it prevents contamination of other materials. A few spoonsful of peanut butter left in a jar can turn an entire bin of recyclables into garbage.
For more information, please send an email to ERA at info@era-ehs.com or see their Website.

The Monthly Web Advice by Marketing Ultimum: Mobile-responsive Website: a necessity?

In March 2018, Google announced that it has officially launched “mobile indexing first,” meaning that the search engine will now first use the mobile version of a site to index it and classify it in its results. Although it is specified that this new feature will not have a direct impact on desktop search results, websites listed there are already affected by whether they have a mobile version or not.
In this context, we believe that it is now essential for businesses to have a Website that is adapted to mobile devices, which now represent the main mean of Internet access. But how to do it?
First, to find out if your site is adequately optimized for mobile devices, you can use the Google testing tool on the subject. If your site proves to be unsuitable for mobile devices, you might want to consider adapting it. To do so, here are the two aspects that we believe to be the pillars of an efficient mobile version:
A. Responsive Web Design: The central aspect of a mobile version is having a design which is adapted to smart phone and tablet screens. Such a design should use less space on the screen while putting an emphasis on the experience of users, who prefer to read more streamlined content on smaller screens. Even though you can have a mobile-friendly website that doesn’t adjust to screen sizes, the best practice remains having a responsive web design (R.W.D.). In the latter, the website HTML code remains the same for all devices (including desktop) but its components adjust to the size of the screens on which they are visualized.
To illustrate this concept, you can have a look at the photos below, showing the responsiveness of the design we built for the new NexGedia Enterprise’s Website, another Technoparc resident.
B. Content: It is important to ensure that you have high quality and relevant content on your site, especially when viewed on a mobile device. It is better to limit the amount of text to the essential pieces of information and use images and videos to represent the key concepts that one seeks to communicate.
Note that it is also important to optimize the media, stylistic references and server requests of the Website, so that it loads at its optimal speed, as Google rankings prioritize sites with loading times inferior to 7 seconds.
